Drilling fluid cycle tank volume design principles

The effective volume of drilling fluid cycle tank should be large enough to accommodate the maximum cyclic volume of the drilling fluid in the drilling process, and have enough reserve capacity, meanwhile have the abilities of participating in cycle and controlling well in case of an emergency. In recent years, with the developing of the overseas markets and the increasing demand of drilling fluid solid control systems by drilling craft, the drilling fluid cycle tanks have the phenomenon of enlarging volume aimlessly.

If the cubage of solid control system is oversize, the cost of moving drill rig and drilling fluid will be increased. Therefore, reasonable cubage is the goal which pursued by users. According to the well drilling practice by many years, it uses the method of calculation of drilled well hole cubage or drilled well casing cubage to calculate the effective cubage of the drilling fluid solid control system in general. The results of the two methods of calculation are approximate.

In a set of solid control system, the size of the single tank and the amount of the cycle tank are decided by the height of the derrick substructure, the local transportation condition, and the effective volume of the drill rig needed, etc.

The top of the cycle tank should have enough space to put solid control equipments, mud agitator and drill rig transfer pump. Moreover, the settings of the associated line, mud trough, accessory, pump inhalation, remove pipeline, water pipeline and the space of other equipments should be considered. The volume of every storehouse mainly depend on the installation space of solid control equipments like shale shaker, desander, desilter, centrifuge, and other auxiliary equipments to confirm.
