Handling Capacity of Shale Shakers

Handling capacity of a drilling fluid shale shaker is an important index to measure the performance of a shale shaker. Due to the combined effects of dynamic parameters of shale shakers, physical characteristics of  drilling fluid and other factors, there's no general theoretical formula at present.

1. Practical Calculation Formula of Handling Capacity is not exist

Experiment under specific conditions empirical formula can be obtained, but for some limited conditions, it's difficult to achieve in practical conditions. The handling capacity in product manual refers to the maximum throughput under certain conditions, some instructions attached with handling capacity experimental curve for the users' reference.

2. Incidents that Influence the Variation of Handling Capacity

1) Amplitude, Vibration Frequency, Screen angle, Plastic Viscosity

Experimental studies from home and abroad confirm that, the handling capacity of a shale shaker increases with the increase of amplitude and vibration frequency, and decreases with the increase of screen angle. However, the effects of the three factors are different, amplitude has the greatest impact, followed by screen angle and frequency with minimal impact.

Meanwhile, the properties of the drilling fluids, especially its plastic viscosity affects a lot to handling capacity. In the case of other conditions remain unchanged, the plastic viscosity increases, the handling capacity will be significantly decreased. According to statistics, viscosity increases by 10%, handling capacity will decline 2%. Through the analysis of submerged and wet granular throwing index, we know that the plastic viscosity and dynamic shear stress of drilling fluid can greatly increase resistance to particles jump and reduce particles speed.

2) Shape, Size, Solids Content and Particle Size Distribution of Solids Phase

The shape, size, solids content and particle size distribution of solids phase in drilling fluid also directly influence handling capacity and cuttings moving speed, especially particles close to screen mesh are more easily to be stuck in screen holes and result in screen blinding which will greatly reduce handling capacity and at the same time increase the thickness of mud layer, make the particles jump more difficult and reduce cuttings moving speed.
